Eating Fruit Protects Your Lungs

A few decades ago, a group of British medical researchers found it almost impossible to produce emphysema in experimental animals, even when they forced them to smoke cigarettes at a two-pack-a-day rate when they fed the animals fruit.

Next, the researchers divided 3,000 human smokers and non-smokers into two groups, those who regularly ate fruit and those who didn't. When they measured their breathing capacity, they found that the fruit eaters—whether smokers or nonsmokers—had much stronger lungs. They believed this was likely due to the extra vitamin C the fruit eaters ate. Vitamin C protects the lungs by squelching harmful free radicals and by helping the body repair whatever tissue damage does occur.

Vitamin C is one important essential nutrient that fruits offer, but fruits and vegetables have many more beneficial nutrients that help our bodies stay healthy. Fruits are an excellent source of many essential vitamins and minerals. They are also high in fiber (especially when eaten fresh, raw, and whole). Fruits also provide a wide range of health-boosting antioxidants, including flavonoids. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables can reduce your risk of developing heart disease, cancer, inflammation, and diabetes.

Fresh, local fruit in-season gives you the highest amount of nutritional value. When grown locally, fruit is more like to have ripened fully before being picked. That means its nutritional value was allowed to develop to the max. (It also tastes better!) Next best are organic fruits you buy at the supermarket, especially if they were grown closer to where you live. (When fruit is shipped hundreds or thousands of miles, the farmers pick it while it is still green and it ripens en route.) Organic fruit might cost more, but it can give you up to four times the nutritional value. Plus, you do not need to worry about ingesting harmful chemicals and you can rest assured that the good people growing and picking it were not poisoned in the process.

No matter how much fruit you eat, smoking is still bad for your health. Most experimental animals make their own vitamin C, and they maintain higher concentrations of it than we humans do. So, when medical researchers try to give them emphysema, their self-made vitamin C protects them. Humans don't have the capacity to make our own vitamin C, which is one of the reasons why regular fruit eating is so vital. Basically, eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables once again proves to be beneficial to the body's natural healing process.

And eating a ton of fruit is no excuse not to schedule regular chiropractic adjustments! Like eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep, regular visits to your chiropractor help you experience minimal pain and maintain optimal health.
